I love/hate resting on weekends. On the one hand, it's great to have an open schedule, catch up on sleep, relax. On the other hand, I feel like I should do more intense workouts and really try to build my cardiovascular strength, which is lacking. Work is going to be very busy next week because of a high-priority project I'm working on solo for the most part, so I SHOULD take advantage of this free time to work out. I SHOULD.
Still no word on which home team I'm a part of. I'm going to a potluck event for the just-evaled class of skaters in a few hours, so maybe I'll found out?
Operation buy-a-swimsuit was a success. Just a plain black Nike one-piece with white trim at top. I'm starting to get nervous about lessons now...

Officially a Roller Derby Girl!
Woo! I'm officially a roller derby girl again! Side note: I passed my evals last fall but took a leave of absence, and so I had to go through an expedited fresh meat process again. So, Monday night I took my rules test and time trials, and last night I had my official evaluation. It's great to be back on the team! The home season is about to start, so I can't wait to find out which home team I get drafted to. I have my fingers crossed for a particular one, but we will see!
Tonight after work I'm finally going to go buy a one-piece swimming suit since I'm hoping to start swim lessons next week. I'm gonna go with either a Nike or a Speedo, in solid colors. Woot!

Summer Fitness Goals
Sure, I may not know EXACTLY what I wanna do sports-wise (and by that I mean competitively), but goals are always good! I miss the itch of individual athletic pursuits. A friend of mine recently competed in a competition, and it made me realize how much I miss getting up super early on a weekend to compete. I just don't know what direction I'm going in, and I believe it's better to take a step back and reassess sometimes than just keep plugging away and messing with muscle memory.
But thankfully I do have some goals to work for this summer...
1- Roller derby rules test and evals TOMORROW! I'm super nervous. Home teams start practicing next week, and I really wanna compete in the bouts this summer. I'm confident about the rules test. I have a few skills to work on a bit today and tomorrow...jitters...
2- Swimming lessons! I am almost 28 years old and I don't know how to swim. I also pitched a local news daily to write about learning to swim as an adult and was assigned the piece, so that puts extra pressure to actually learn. (Not that I need extra incentive!) I've decided with my schedule to go with private lessons with the local YMCA, so this week I'm going to need to pay for a 3-month membership.
3 - Surfing lessons! Good gosh do I wanna learn how to surf. Goal #2 will be an important pre-req. Ha.
4 - Start running. As in, more consistently. Twice a week, for ANY distance, every week would be fantastic for me.
For now, just focusing on #1: lots of mental prep tonight for tomorrow's roller derby test: rules test and time trials!

Summer Reading
Hello, almost summertime! This is the stack of books I'm excited to at least start going through in the coming months! (I don't know why it came out so blurry! :( )
- The Future of Sports Nutrition Timing by John Ivy & Robert Portman
- Born to Run by Christoper McDougall
- Running Injuries - Treatment & Prevention by Jeff Galloway & David Hannaford
- The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Life Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess by Lou Schuler with Cassandra Forsythe
- The Strength Training Anatomy Workout by Frederic Delavier, Michael Gundill
- The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss
I'm nearly halfway through The 4-Hour Body. The others, I've not yet begun but I'm really looking forward to reading more. And no I am NOT a runner, although I'm hoping it's something I'll start doing more frequently.
I'm pretty sure I will get through all of them this year. I'm NOT sure about my future doing any one sport seriously ever again. I guess we'll see! In the meantime, I still plan to get into the very best shape I can! We'll see how that goes!

First Post!
Er...I'm not the best at introductions, so I hope this intro post won't seem standoffish. (Can blogs be standoffish? Let's go with yes!)
I love love love working out...and I also love to EAT. I'm hoping to blog about both, although everyday details about the day job and side job (engineer slash freelance writer) and life in general are sure to be sprinkled throughout.
I chose "spoonful of fitness" because I like doing a variety of sports to stay active. (Strict regimes are NOT for me! Sorry, P90X.) After several years as a competitive athlete and four-hour workouts four days a week, I realized I can't do predictable and long stretches of exercise; having a "must-do" checklist for every day killed my joy for the sport I did, so I quit. Some day, if I can figure some stuff out, I might go back...till then, lots of short bursts ("spoonfuls"!) of exercise and yummy food for me!
xo
